When Suhasini met a bad guy!

Posted: 14 Mar 2009 06:50 AM PDT

Audio release of the upcoming flick, Alaiyodu Vilayadu, was held at the Producers' Council premises last evening. The event saw a host of celebrities vouching for producer Rajpreeth, who was associated with cinematographer Ashok Kumar during his heydays. Rajpreeth had worked for hits like Alaigal Oyvadillai and the likes. He now dons the producer's cap for Alaiyodu Vilayadu. His contemporaries including Bhagyaraj, Suhasini and Parthiban reminisced their
early days nostalgically at the event. The audio was released by Bhagyaraj and received by Prathiban and Suhasini.
Speaking at the event, Suhasini teasingly mentioned that she had not met a single bad guy in the industry despite the popular myth that cinema is all things bad. She added, between her trademark grin, that Rajpreeth was the only bad guy. "I knew him from the days I entered cinema and that was when we started searching cinema," she said.
Parthiban went nostalgic about how, true to the words in Quran, Bhagyaraj's name is embossed in the food he consumes intending that his Guru was the reason behind his success in cinema. He also revealed that Rajpreeth helped him a lot in his debut directorial venture Pudiya Paadai.
Bhagyaraj, in his address, mentioned that Rajpreeth is the best disciple of Ashok Kumar, the way Parthiban is to him. He also wished success for Alaiyodu Vilayadu adding that such small-scale movies should reap commercial success.
The event saw participation from Bhagyaraj, Parthiban, Suhasini, Snehan, S Ve Shekar, Rama Narayanan, Srinivasan and Siva Sakthi Pandiyan.

Slumdog quarter billionaire

Posted: 14 Mar 2009 06:26 AM PDT

Slumdog millionaire has been topping the news for quite some time and to add a cherry on the icing, Rahman and Resul Pookutty brought India the Oscars. When we are wondering why this movie has become so close to Americans as the movie has crossed $125 million in domestic circuit alone we come across a report which makes our research much more complicated. A movie which was made at a nominal budget of $15 million and a movie whose producer was unable to find a distributor and decided
to release it straight to DVD has collected a whopping $250 million worldwide(almost Rs. 1250 crores).
Slumdog millionaire just became quarter billionaire and still showing no signs of coming down the box-office charts in both US and UK. Slumdog became the biggest movie for Fox searchlight worldwide and will soon become its highest grossing movie in the US markets too by beating the Teen pregnant saga Juno which accumulated $140 million. By the end of its theatrical run this rags to riches story will come close to the magical $300 million mark.
It is also the biggest movie based on India, beating Gandhi which has an adjusted worldwide gross coming very close to $200 million. Bend it like bekham, which made $72 million worldwide, Monsoon wedding with a total close to $31 million and Bride and Prejudice which made almost $25 million worldwide takes the next three positions. We do have come up with lot of theories of a movie instilling hope in these troubled recession time is the reason for its thunderous behavior at the ticket window or the sheer energy of this musical treat which was much needed for the audience who were offered more blood and gore to quench their thirst. Film analysts are still at bay in this area of research and maybe we will never be able to find the proper answer and the age old sentence still holds true, Audience are unpredictable.

Pyramid Saimira’s tax troubles

Posted: 14 Mar 2009 06:25 AM PDT

The reported non-payment of the self assessment tax by the production house major, Pyramid Saimira, which also owns a chain of theatres, had the Income Tax Department attaching the Rs. 240 crores bank account. However, a spokesperson of Pyramid Saimira said that there was no tax liability whatsoever, and it would challenge the decision of the IT Department. A case in this regard is expected to be filed at the Madras High Court on Monday. According to Mr P.S. Saminathan, the CMD of Pyramid Saimira,
"As far as PSTL (Pyramid Saimira Theatres Limited) is concerned, as of now we have no tax dues. We have filed a revised return wherein we have claimed a refund. There is no tax demand on us based on completed assessment."

Flops galore in Bollywood

Posted: 14 Mar 2009 06:24 AM PDT

Ghajini and Rab ne bana de jodi gave solace to the Hindi film industry in the last month of 2008 and we would be needing one such blockbuster to get things moving in Bollywood as 2009's first two months have hardly pleased the distributors. With many movies which gave big thumbs up from the critics like Luck by chance, Dev D, President is coming and Stoneman murders only Dev D and Raaz got thumbs up from the public.
Delhi 6 and Chandni Chowk to China the two monster release became colossal flops and movies like Dev D and Raaz 2 which had minimal star power and minimal budget went to make some quick bucks at the ticket counter. Dev D became the darling of the multiplex whereas Raaz 2 became the single screen favorite. Last week release 13B, Kaarma aur holi and Dhoondte reha jaoge did little to change the scenario. But with many interesting titles up on cards like Straight, 99, Aa dekhen zara, 8X10 Tasveer, New york, Kambakth ishq and Kaminey lined up to enthrall the audience in the first half of the year, lets hope that more smiles and laughs are ensured in the next few months with extra few digits ready to figure in the pay-in-slip of the distributors.

Vijay and Ajith in deep confusions look depressed

Posted: 14 Mar 2009 04:07 AM PDT

Actors Vijay and Ajith are of course on the top of charts as they are being sought out by many producers and filmmakers for a project. But now with changing phase taking over in Kollywood, the actors who have been rigidly following the traits of commercial Masala Cinema are drenched in troubles as they've been witnessing utter flops with that formula.
Ajith Kumar in the past three years didn't witness any success other than 'Billa' that actually turned to be a good hit not just because of his performance, but the technical show of top-notching aspects.
Similarly, the last three films of Vijay 'Azhagiya Tamizh Magan', 'Kuruvi' and 'Villu' terribly flunked though with the producers' influence it was forced to cross 100-150 days in all theatres.
So, what would they be actually looking out for in their forthcoming films? The same commercial formula or something realistic….

Well, in general both Shah Rukh Khan and Maddy carry whole lot of resemblance when it comes to be emoting to various occasions on the screens. In fact, both of them have been sharing good rapport though they hadn't starred together. Of course, they were supposed to pair up for 'My Name is Khan'.
However, with Maddy getting too busy with Aamir's '3 Idiots', he had missed the chance about starring together.
With his 'Guru En Aalu' remake of 'Yes Boss' hitting screens on March 20, here's a surprising statement made by Director Selvah of his film.
He says, 'When I informed about my wish for remaking 'Yes Boss', Shah Rukh Khan without any pause referred Madhavan would be the right option'…

'City of Joy' – the entire globe terms it so. Of course, a home for veterans and Capital of British India happens to be a ducky spot for various Kollywood auteurs, who love to film over there. Naturally, the gushing river of Ganges and the Hooghly Bridge has been noticed in many films. Right from Mani Ratnam to every filmmaker, Kolkata has been their best-loved backdrops.
At the moment, various big tickets are being shot over there. It goes inclusive with Mani Ratnam's bilingual 'Raavana', Surya's 'Aadhavan', Vikram's 'Kandasamy' and more. Mani Ratnam had earlier canned his 'Yuva' on the elegant Hooghly Bridge. Sources have stated that Vikram's 'Kanthaswamy' will have the flashbacks shot over the backdrops of Ganges.
K.S. Ravikumar wielding megaphone for Surya's 'Aadhavan' has revealed that the entire film would be filmed extensively in Kolkata.
Although, it's a thickly populated busy-land, the scenic essence are really relishing to the eyes.
