Director's comments hurts film's success?

Posted: 17 Dec 2008 11:02 AM CST

Bharathiraja's comment about the corporate companies entering the film industry could hurt him now. His long-delayed Bommalattam hit the screens just a few days back and it could be out of the theatres even before the audience realizes the movie was released! The film, which stars Arjun and Kajal Agarwal, is inspired by a real life murder mystery.

Bharathiraja's statement that the corporate companies are like crocodiles eating away a major chunk of the profits and that they do not take the pains to market the film seems to have irked corporate production houses like Pyramid Saimira.
This statement has proved to be costly mistake for the director, as most of the theatres are now under the wings of Pyramid Saimira. Irked by these remarks, PS has now decided to take Bommalattam off its theatres citing the arrival of new releases.

Sun TV bails out Endhiran

Posted: 17 Dec 2008 10:59 AM CST

Eros International and Ayngaran International have finally washed their hands off their prestigious mega budget project - Endhiran. Putting all speculations to rest, Sun Pictures, an unit of Sun TV, has brought this multilingual film for a whopping Rs. 165 crores.
The production house – Eros International had produced two Bollywood flicks Drona and Yuvvraj recently. But these films did not do well at the box office and the production house was reeling under severe financial pressure ever since these releases. It is said that the producers were looking for a suitable "buyer" to sell Endhiran, as they could not continue with the project. The major factor that was taken into consideration during the discussion with Sun Pictures was Rajinikanth's call sheet. It is said that Rajini was due to take part in the shooting from December 19th, 2008 to January 30th 2009. The next schedule was due to commence from February 4th onwards. The producers probably did not want to waste this all-important call sheet and therefore settled for a quick solution.
With director Shankar in no mood to compromise on the production cost of the movie, the extremely high advance amount that Eros International had paid to some of the top actors and actresses from Bollywood for future projects and the overall global economic meltdown, are the other factors attributed to their inability to support Endhiran any further. An official announcement is expected from Sun Pictures.

What united Kollywood in 2008?

Posted: 17 Dec 2008 10:43 AM CST

Tinsel world is not generally seen as a place of overwhelming togetherness. If anything, it is sometimes perceived as next only to politics in terms of infighting, squabbles and disputes within one's own field of work, which is maybe one of the reasons so many people from films enter politics. There have been many instances of directors making complaints on non-cooperation of actors, producers accusing artistes of not sticking to commitments, stars hitting back stating that their dates were never properly utilized, pay issues and numerous other disagreements which have at many times jeopardized the fate of films, many of which still lie in cans hoping for salvation on the silver screen. But 2008 witnessed two very emphatic shows of unity across the film industry. It is ironic to observe that while the disputes relating to film matters have remained, the film fraternity united for some matters totally independent of movies. This shows that when it is for a cause, professional differences are easily set aside.
The first instance was the protest against Karnataka's stand on the Hogenakkal issue. Now, let's not get into the finer details of who was right in their claims, those are things best left to political arbitrators. Well, Tamil cinema artistes turned up in full force to show that they thought that Tamil Nadu was right in its demands. While many spoke many things on that day, it was only a certain 'kick' that was remembered, for all the wrong reasons. Obviously, the 'kick' did not have its timing spot on and even though completely unintentional, it seemed to have hurt some very sensitive spots in Karnataka. The unity that Tamil cinema showed lasted for just that one day, because the man who delivered the 'kick' in the heat of the moment was left to face the consequences by himself, even receiving occasional criticism from his own side about the manner in which he was facing the consequences which culminated in an expression of regret that was seen by many as an insult to Tamil Nadu. But, cynicism apart, the incident showed that given the right reasons, it was not tough to find backing from Tamil cinema. It was reminiscent of some of the joint protests that we have seen in the past, especially the one that took place a few years ago in Neyveli.
The Hogenakkal issue passed. But the more equivocal show of unity and support came for a far more pressing reason. The Sri Lankan Tamils issue has been rankling for more than two decades now and all that resentment seemed to burst out at once in a show of protest against the inhuman acts that are happening in the island country. Neither memory, nor a search of chronicles reveals any greater show of unity in the Tamil film industry. The sounds echoed in almost every corner of Tamil Nadu. As if symbolizing cinema in its hierarchy, the protests were led by the directors with some fiery speeches and ideas at Rameshwaram. Some of the speeches were even misunderstood as sedition, but that should be a case of words being read out of context. The actors followed the directors, every one came in black, the solidarity shown was greater than before, everyone spoke their heart out not caring much about consequences even after a couple of directors had to court arrest for what they said. This sparked off many other similar protests, the technicians, fans' associations and other groups in their own small way. This managed to filter across cinema into the other realms where funds were collected for the welfare of Lankan Tamils; cinema was having an effect on society, for once it was good and it did not come from the screen.
Cinema is undoubtedly an industry where disputes and arguments rise like no other and are also publicized like no other. This might be partly attributed to the risky nature of film business where fortunes fluctuate every weekend and huge amounts can be made or lost in a matter of days. But, cinema too can stand united when there is one common cause and to see Tamil cinema identify such causes as worth standing up for was definitely heartening.

A treat with Vijay's Villu!

Posted: 17 Dec 2008 10:53 AM CST

It was indeed a great day for Vijay fans: the release of the most expected audio of the year, Ilayathalapathy's Villu. About 50 fans from all over Chennai gathered in front of Meta Music in Ritchie street where all the Music CD arrives first in the city. Colorful banners, crackers, abhisekams, and all other elements to make a celebration bright and cheerful were present. The moment the discs arrived, crackers went off and the fans began shouting with joy, raising slogans about their hero Vijay. The audio shop owner understood the curiosity of the fans and had huge speakers playing the Villu songs. The tunes started with the Vijay special Intro song. Fans started to dance on the steps. It was like a big festival or a carnival taking place in the most busy part of the city. The shop owner said, "This is the first time an audio release was celebrated in a grand manner. Only Rajini movies have such events, but Villu release was even grander than them". With such great fanatics behind Vijay, Villu is sure to become a huge hit.

Aayirathil Oruvan to have topless missies

Posted: 17 Dec 2008 04:51 AM CST

The entire team seems to be awestruck with Director Selvaraghavan's 'Aayirathil Oruvan'. Perhaps, presenting his flicks with obscene themes and adult themes his forthcoming film isn't an elision. For sure, it would peak the flick with high promos and what's it all about? Yeah! Aayirathil Oruvan will have at least 20 women posing topless. As known earlier, the film is about forest primitives and scientists. Well, primitives wouldn't be wearing Manish Malhotra's designed costumes as in Director Shankar's films.
Earlier, Selvaraghavan was on pursuit of getting female junior artists in Tamil Nadu were none of them agreed. Finally, it's all the way from Mumbai that Selvaraghavan has got the missies to South for shooting those appealing scenarios.

Silamabattam goes to court

Posted: 17 Dec 2008 04:40 AM CST

A suit filed against the release of Silambattam in Chennai seems to have dampened the spirits of the film's unit. It may be noted that Silmbattam is slated to be released on December 18th, 2008. According to the complainant Ramamoorthy, the film should not be released unless his dues are settled. In the complaint it has been stated that he had
financed Rs. 59 lakhs in 1998 to Simbu Cine Arts to facilitate the completion of the film Monisha En Monalisa.
As per the agreement, the amount was to have been settled by giving him the distributorship rights. Unfortunately the film failed to garner profits as expected and the financier could not realize his money. Based on this, Ramamoorthy had filed a plaint stating that his dues must be settled by Simbu Cine Arts before they release Silambattam.

Bollywood to Kollywood

Cameraman Srinivasa Reddy is happy to have been recognized at his home – Tamil Nadu. Although he is synonymous with ad films and has directed some big names like Amitabh, Abhishek and Kareena for ads, the right opportunity in Kollywood was evading him. He has recently finished up Saamida (which was
just released) and his camera work is widely being appreciated.
He has now Pookadai Ravi in his hands which is a joint production venture of KR and Raadan pictures. He has also been spotted by Kalaipuli Thanu recently, who has made him sign on the dotted line for his next project. Besides, Srinivasa Reddy also has the short film Malligai to his credit.

Reema Sen's best in her career

Posted: 17 Dec 2008 04:36 AM CST

Actress Reema Sen is upbeat and confident. She is confident that the delay in completing the 'Aayirathil Oruvan' will not affect the prospects of the movie's fortune at the box office.
'Aayirathil Oruvan' directed by Selvaraghavan has Karthi, Reema Sen, Andrea and Parthiban in the cast. The shooting for the movie is on for almost over a year.
Reema Sen preens, 'the film is in the making for over 250 days now. I feel exhilarated and at the same time exasperated. But as an actor, it's a fulfilling experience. Every scene is challenging'
Asked about her role in the film, she says, ' I play a heavy duty role — unlike my past breezy appearances. The second half of the film is particularly powerful. It demands an intense delineation of the character I play. At one point, I dropped half a kilo every day on the sets. When I singed the film, I did not expect that it would be such a serious role'.
All the best Reema!
