Mankatha's story is said to revolve around a Mafia gang gambling during the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket season. The film was formally launched in August 2010, with its principal photography beginning on October 25, 2010. Filming was held for more than eight months and took place primarily across Chennai, the Dharavi slum in Mumbai and Bangkok, Thailand.
The film's release is scheduled for August 2011.

Trisha Krishnan: Great! I’ve seen some of your issues, especially in the last couple of months, and I’m very excited to be on the cover. I like the fact that you portray sexy and glamorous in a nice way.
CHENNAI: Although she might not be happy with the way her Bollywood adventure turned out, Trisha still has a lot to look forward to from her career in South Indian films.
Her upcoming Tamil film is opposite her screen idol Kamal Haasan. The actress is not only excited about her role in ‘Manmadhan Ambu’, but is also mighty pleased with her stage performance with her acclaimed costar. Trisha sang a song and recited poetry on stage with Kamal Haasan.
Referring Kamal Haasan as her guru, Trisha Krishnan says that it was due to the sincere tutoring efforts of Kamal Haasan that she was able to sing and recite so well during the audio launch of ‘Manmadhan Ambu’ in Singapore. ‘Manmadhan Ambu’ is a romantic comedy where Trisha Krishnan plays the part of an upcoming actress.
Also in the pipeline for the actress are films such as ‘Mankatha’ and ‘Savithri’ opposite actors Ajith and Venkatesh respectively.

Trisha, who usually does not speak or spend much time on stage other than dancing, did not hide her excitement when she was on stage cheered by everyone. More than just appearing on stage, she was asked to sing a song alongside Kamal (Kamal Kavithai). When asked about her performance, a blushing Trisha said that the credit goes to Kamal as he was the one who persuaded her for her stage act. Informing that this was her first ever stage act, Trisha said that she had said ‘No’ to Kamal sir more than 1000 times but still he persuaded her to sing with him. The film revolves around Gopal (Madhavan) is madly in love with an actress Ambujam (Trisha). But he is really worried whether she has any soft corner for him. To clear his doubts, he appoints a best detective in town (played by Kamal Haasan).
Ambujam is now on a cruise for film's shooting and the spy follows her up as on assignment and both get acquainted. Sooner, the spy's love (Sangeetha) mistakes their relationship which resulted in unexpected confusions. Now it's up to Gopal to clear up the problems that is followed by a happy ending.

On November 19, Kamal Haasan's Manmadhan Ambu audio launch spread over two days in a cruise ship and at Singapore Expo, Max Pavilion will be telecast on the channel. It has got television industry watchers by surprise.
The music for this romantic comedy has been scored by none other than the effervescent music director Devi Sri Prasad. The movie has six songs; of which two have been sung by Kamal Haasan himself.
Manmadhan Ambu songs will be Released November 20.
The buzz around the next big film of the year, Kamal Haasan's 'Manmadhan Ambu' has started. According to latest news available the audio of 'Mamnadhan Ambu' is scheduled to be released on October 27.
The film was expected to hit the theaters for Diwali and now the new release date has been announced as December 10.
'Mamadhan Ambu' starring Kamal, Madhavan, Trisha and Sangeetha is a situational comedy. In the film, Kamal Haasan plays a private detective hired by Madhavan to go after his love Trisha to confirm her sincerity. The film was mostly shot in Europe and that is going to be a treat.
Directed KS Ravikumar who is a master craftsman has ensured that this comic caper also make it to the top like all his other classic comedies with Kamal like Thenali, Panchathanthiram etc.
Kamal Haasan seems to be invigorated and more enthusiastic about his project. The Padmashree is now spotted with never-seen before electrification. The actor kick-started shooting for 'Manmadhan Ambu' before 3 months and has now almost completed 75%.
The entire crew has now flown down to Kodaikanal for the shooting of second schedule as planned earlier.
The film boasts of certain technical vistas that involves on-the-spot dubbing. Such innovative concepts are commonly found in Hollywood movies and for the first time have been applied in Tamil cinema.

Trisha feels she hasn't got enough of Mumbai yet. Her Bollywood debut 'Khatta Meetha' is nearing release and the southern beauty bitten by the Mumbai bug like never before.
She apparently is overwhelmed to the fact Mumbai never sleeps. She also expressed her liking for the Mumbai pav bhaji street food and the night life the city dishes out. She said "I love the Mumbai city" and vowed to return whenever she gets time. Trisha's first Hindi film 'Khatta Meetha' directed by Priyadarshan which will star Akshay Kumar as her hero is releasing on July 23.
"I have put 110 per cent in 'Khatta Meetha' and can't wait for July 23 when the film releases," says Trisha, who is making her Bollywood debut with the Priyadarshan-directed movie, which has Akshay Kumar as the leading man. The actress, who is currently shooting with Kamal Haasan in France for 'Manmadhan Ambu', says, "My role in 'Khatta Meetha' was meaty and everything was just so perfect. Everything just happened over a 10 minutes phone call, all thanks to Priyan." On things she expects from her Bollywood venture, Trisha says, "I am looking forward to more acceptance and appreciation. I am very much interested to see how people from south, from where I belong, react to it." Excited about working with Kamal, she says, "What a man he is. Kamal sir is an awesome genius who has wide knowledge about anything not just under the sun, but beyond that too. I am enjoying every bit of working with him."

Now that we all know that the Manmadhan Ambu is a romantic flick, the big question that all Kamal Haasan's fans have is whether there would be a kissing scene, which his films are well-known for. This question was brought up during the press meet of Manmadhan Ambu, which took place recently.
To this, director KS Ravikumar said that such a scene would be in the film if the storyline so demands. However, it would not be incorporated so as to make it look out of place.
Manmadhan Ambu, which also stars Madhavan, and Trisha, will be shot extensively in Europe.
Trisha's next Tamil venture, to be produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin, will have Kamal Haasan pairing up with her. The film's music is being scored by Devi Sri Prasad (DSP). The lady was recently in Chennai to render a few poetic verses for this yet-to-be-named film. Kamal also joined Trisha at the studio to record his voice. Apparently, this is not a song but something like a singsong.Kamal, known for his versatility in all fields in the film industry, has already rendered several songs and this is not something new for the actor. The lady with the Midas touch, at least for the moment. The last couple of years have been a dream run for this actress. She has done movies opposite almost all the leading young heroes of the industry, she has landed hit after hit, climbed up the popularity charts and is currently setting the trends for others to follow. This year has already seen her having two major releases, Paiyaa and Sura and two more might follow before the year ends. Things would never have looked so rosy for Tamannah, who has also proved her mettle as an actress of substance in the early phase of her career with films like Kalloori.
VTV seems to have given her a fresh start. Not that she was doing too badly before VTV happened. But, there is definitely a change in perception since the Gautham Menon movie happened. Even before that Trisha had started showing her intentions of changing from the completely commercial track towards roles that offered her more than just the mundane stuff; Abhiyum Naanum was the beginning. But, she has not given up on the commercial varieties as yet. Waiting to happen next is perhaps the biggest move in her career, a movie opposite Kamal with KSR at the helm. It does not get bigger.
She was the hit maiden of Kollywood for almost three years on the trot. It was as if she couldn't put a foot wrong with films like Ghajini, Pokkiri and the huge Dasavatharam. But, Bollywood beckoned and she had to take a break from Tamil. But, if she is in the scheme of things even after nearly two years of absence, that only goes to show how much of an impact she has had during her time here. Well, she has never had any dearth of big projects. Who gets the chance of starring in three consecutive Superstar films, however small the role may be? But, the problem that she faced during certain junctures was that most of her big projects seemed to be turning turtle at the box office. The tide seems to have been stemmed a bit with Aadhavan and she now seems to be in a relatively slow phase of her career with Boss Engira Baskaran opposite Arya on the anvil. But, all that could change very soon. Hopefully, she gets the right kind of opportunities henceforth and also manages to avoid the glamour trap.
Sivaji was the crescendo, and nothing has come close to it as yet. Right from the Superstar to his son-in-law, she has worked with the entire spectrum of stars in the industry, save a few. But, the last couple of years have left her starved for genuine hits, in spite of having worked with quite a few big banners and stars. But, one never knows when the turnaround in about to happen and it could well be with the Arya starrer Chikku Bukku or with Jiiva in Rowthiram. It is only a matter of time before she gets over her relatively lean patch. To her credit, her dancing skills seem to be a few notches above the other leading ladies in the industry at the moment.
She was so busy in Telugu that she hardly could find any time for Tamil. But, the success of Arundhathee did the trick. Kollywood wooed this actress who had proved her worth and thus Vettaikaran happened. Singam is now ready to roar and there is Vada Chennai to look forward to. That's two big releases within a year which is definitely great progress for an actress whose only previous Tamil film was Rendu, way back in 2006. She surely seems to have all that it takes to stay in the top rung, the only question being whether Tollywood will leave her with enough time to do so.
She has been around for quite a while now and still is one of the busiest leading ladies going around. She is one of the few actresses to have quite a number of meaty roles to her credit, like the ones in Pallikkoodam and Pirivom Sandhippom. Even though she seems to have a high level of popularity with the audiences and proven skills on all fronts, a blockbuster that can place her in the top league, in reckoning for those big projects is yet missing. Her mysterious character in Goa has added a new dimension to her career and with roles like Bhavani IPS and many other films in her kitty, the times are only looking to get better for this actress.
The National Award winning actress has been sauntering through a bevy of flicks, but is still in search of a role that will let her live up to the promise created by Muthalagu. She might not be having the biggest of projects or hits, but is definitely one of the busiest going around at this point of time. And, her ticket to the top of the ladder might be here in 2010 with Raavan and Raktha Charithra. Not only will these be films under master craftsmen Mani Ratnam and Ram Gopal Varma respectively, they will also introduce her to Bollywood. There is little doubt that quite a few things are waiting to happen in this actress' career very shortly.
We have not seen her much since the bubbly Hasini of Santhosh Subramaniam graced screens nearly two years back. Hindi and Telugu have kept her busy with quite a few good projects. But, she has done well enough during her time down south to remain in the minds of audiences and directors. The effervescent screen presence and cute appeal are her greatest strengths and she seems to know extremely well how to play to those points of strengths. She will be reaffirming her presence in Kollywood this year with Uthama Puthiran
After quite a few years in Bollywood, this lady finally made her debut in Tamil as the classy Meghna in Vaaranam Aayiram. She seems to have leapfrogged directly into the big league, considering the stars that she has been paired up with in her first two movies. It is not very common for an actress to make her debut opposite Suriya and then follow it up with one opposite Ajith. But then, to be fair, she deserves the credit for making her opportunities count and now she is currently working in Gautham Menon's quickie and seems all set to feature in another flick of Menon's also which will be Ajith's 50th film. One cannot get luckier than this. So, Sameera is going great guns. How far will she go? Too early to say!
There are some kissing scenes between Trisha and Simbhu in the film Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya. When asked Trish whether she would continue to act in the kissing scenes, she said," There is no problem for me to act in kissing scenes. Since the story demanded it, I kissed Simbhu.
There is nothing wrong in it. This kind of scenes depends on the story and director's wish. I act according to the director's command. Now I have reached a stage in cinema. It is not correct to say that I will not act in kissing scenes or in swim suit dresses. Lots of appreciations are heaping on me through e mails about my character in Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya. I have acted in many films but I have not received so many appreciations as this film. Character like Jessie is a very rare thing to happen.
They wanted me to pair with Ravi Teja in a Telugu film. I also agreed. But lot of call sheet was required. Hence I pointed out that I had other films to act. So I walked out of this film. I never knew that Shreya was signed for this film. Kamal called me and explained me about my character in the film Yaavarum Kelir. I will be seen differently in this film. My costumes are being different. A new costume designer is designing dresses for me. Kamal is a very perfect person. He is well equipped before the shooting commences. I am acting in the Hindi film Katta Meeta in Mumbai. Most of the shooting has been completed."
Problems created by lovers among themselves are one thing while problems created by others to these lovers are another thing. But what happens if both these takes place in a romance. Simbhu frequently asks," Why should I love Jessie when there are so many other girls". This question may be asked by many youngsters or their friends in real life. The amazing romance, confusions and the pain has been narrated in a beautiful way.
Simbhu dons the role of Karthik. He who completes engineering aspires to become an assistant film director. Simbhu goes as a tenant to a house whose owner is the father of the Malayalee girl Jessie. Trisha who dons the role of Jessie works in Infosys. Karthik seeing Jessie loses his heart to her. At one point he decides that his love will not work out and tries to at least try to become a friend of Jessie. This friendship ultimately turns out to be love. But Jessie gets scared and confused about her parents. She confuses Karthik also and finally deiced to settle with the person arranged by her family. Whether Karthi and Jessie reunite is the rest of the story to be seen on the silver screen.
Simbhu as Karthik is not a boy who can show tricks by hand. His maturity can be well seen in this film. Let it be when he falls in instant love with Jessie or the way he wanders to make his love a success are really captivating. In a scene he follows Jessie to KFC. When he comes near Jessie, she asks whether he was following her. He in turn says that she is following him. Jessie says her office is here. He in turn says that KFC is also here. He watches Jessie walking. When the salesman asks for order, Simbhu asks the bearer not to disturb him because he wants to watch her until he goes. He is almost the mouth piece of today youngsters. His voice modulation is really superb. He captivates the hearts of the audience when he speaks to Jessie about her saying that there is a girl in his heart. This film has taken Simbhu to another phase in his career.
Trisha is cute and exceptionally captured the hearts of the audience. Her mischievous look and her body language are really incredible. In some of the sequences it can visibly seen that there were stiff competition where Simbhu and Trisha are in dialogues in the climax sequences.The dialogues in the film are very realistic and Gowtham has given Simbhu a good scope to bring out his hidden acting talents.
There is no need to speak much about A R Rahman's music. The songs of this film have already become popular. The lead guitar right from the beginning journeys throughout the film with us. The songs Omana Penne and Hosanna are fantastic. Rahman has once again ruled his dynasty with elegance. It definitely makes one to hum the songs while coming out of the theatres.
There are no words to describe the camera work of Manoj. He had earlier shown his coolness in the film Eeram. He had excelled in this film.
On the whole Gowtham Vasudev Menon has given a cute and sweet musical romantic film.
