Our nightingale turns 71

Posted: 23 Apr 2009 10:44 AM PDT

The queen of minstrelsy, whose voice could soar as much as her popularity could, and could bow as low as her humility often commanded her to, celebrates her birthday today.
S Janaki, despite the white starched cotton saree that she always sports, is still our most colourful singer, even five decades after she crooned her first song. Her voice is the stuff that legends are made of, with a malleability for moods that many young singers of today can only have envy for.
If she was the voice of adolescent admirations of Sridevi's in Senthoora Poove, she was equally the voice of the rustic tale of gratefulness in Inji Iduppazhaga. Interestingly, both performances were found National Award worthy. If you were to ask music buffs, they would name hundreds of her 30,000 songs as award-worthy, and they wouldn't be wrong in saying so. If she was the voice of Savithri, she was equally the voice of an exuberant Preity Zinta in Nenjiniley, one of her immortal renditions for AR Rahman in Uyire. Forming a formidable duo in the company of SPB, S Janaki has been the reigning queen for music in the years and with time, her voice has only slowly dimmed.
A singer who has sung in as may as 13 languages, it would not be unfair to call her as popular in South India as Lata Mangeshkar is, up north. In fact, comparisons among the duo have been rife form the time they began singing, with Janaki getting her first chance to sing a song, after auditioning with a Lata Mangeshkar number.
With years gone by, S Janaki might have taken the bow from playback singing, but to many singers who are here today, she is a colossus who peak is almost impossible to attain. Here's wishing Janaki-amma, as she is most often called,a happy birthday and lots of happiness!

Kerala govt to honour Oscar Tamilan

Posted: 23 Apr 2009 10:34 AM PDT

AR Rahman's accolades still haven't stopped poring, even two months after the Oscar was announced. The next in line to honour the musical genius will be the Kerala State Government. Isai Puyal AR Rahman's two Oscars have not only made India proud, but have also put to rest all news about the musician's popularity plummeting in South India after he undertook more Hollywood and Bollywood projects. In fact, the music composer will perform his first live concert after what he did in Kodak Theatre during the Academy Awards ceremony, only in Kerala on May 3. Tickets for the concert, which is in Kozikode, have been selling like hot cakes, with tickets worth Rs 25,000 even being sold. As the musician will be in Kozikode on may 3 anyway, the Kerala government has decided to conduct its felicitation event on may 3rd morning. Leading luminaries in the music and acting field, apart form chief minister Achuthanandhan, will be part of the event, say organsiers of the show. Rahman conducts the concert in the evening to sponsor treatment for HIV positive children.

Ilayaraja acts in a song

Posted: 23 Apr 2009 10:31 AM PDT

Isaignani Ilayaraja is acting in a song for the first time in his career for the film Azhagar malai. Showing up in his own car in his usual sparkling white attire, the musician dedicated six days for the shoot of a song, Ullagam Ippo, in the film directed by SP Rajkumar. The Isaignani, who is known to let his music speak for himself, has finally agreed to even don the greasepaint. Acting as himself in the movie's first song, the musical genius is said to have worked like any professional actor. The song was shot in locations that had an impact in his real life, including his school, the bridge he grew up near, the banyan tree he played with his wife in, and his mother's cemetery. The song was captured in Thiruvannamalai Raman Assramam, where the genius picked his spiritual learnings from, the Uthama Palayam Aatru Paalam, Mullai Periyar, and the Madurai American College where he studied, apart from the Banyan tree that he and his wife Jeeva played under. The musician, who looks up to the land of Thiruvannamalai, as a holy place, trod the entire area without wearing footwear, and let his mother's cemetery been shown on screen for the first time. He also insisted on cleaning it completely by himself and participated with a lot of enthusiasm in the shoot. Director SP Rajkumar gives all credit for making this happen to his producer Sangili Murugan who persuaded the Isaignani to act.

Lyricists turning actors- Special

Posted: 23 Apr 2009 10:29 AM PDT

When Pa Vijay recently surprised the film frat and movie buffs alike, by doing a jig on a hill top with heroine Sridevika by his side, it raised the eyebrows of many. At a time when everybody is trying hard to be a hero, what compels a National Award-winning lyricist to also make the turn, many wondered.

Nyabagangal, directed by Jeeva, launched Pa Vijay as a hero, and its audio launch saw many celebrities pondering over his decision to don the greasepaint. But like how lyricist Vaali pointed out, this trend is neither new to lyricists nor the Tamil cinema.

Kambadasan was one of the earliest ports of our times who took to acting on screen as well, and he created a mark for himself by doing it. And then, there was Kannadasan, who did small roles in films, either in songs or in the talky portion of the movies, like he appeared in a song each in Server Sundaram, Rathathilagam and Suriyagandhi.

And then, there was Vaali, who was introduced to acting by Kamal Haasan, and has done memorable roles in films like Sathyaa, Hey Ram and Parthaale Paravasam. In fact, the lyricist also took to the small screen, by being part of one of K Balachandar's serials, Kaiyalavu Manasu.

Kavipperarasu Vairamuthu also donned the greasepaint for a brief time, including acting as himself for a scene in Jodi. Lyricist Kapilan was one of the most recent to act in a film, that too as himself, in Dasavathaaram, along with Kamal Haasan.

And now, Pa Vijay, despite his first project 'Thai Kaaviyam' being junked, has also become an actor, writing, producing and acting in his own movie. Are the other lyricists listening?

Box Office Rivalry kick-starts: Maddy Vs Vijayakanth

Yup! For past couple of weeks there hadn't been any big releases that of course paved the way of success for 'Ayan' in one way.

However, the collections of 'Ayan' would be dropped a little as there are three flicks slated to hit the screens. All these three have been the most expected films of the season.
Madhavan's 'Guru En Aalu' directed by Selvah is a remake of yesteryear Bollywood blockbuster 'Yes Boss' starring Shah Rukh Khan in lead role. Director Selvah is sure about the film's success as he reveals that it was Shah Rukh who recommended Madhavan for this film. It's a cool-ride of family entertainer.

On the same genre arrives the magniloquent team of Vikraman-Vijayakanth who made a blockbuster 'Vaanathai Pola' a decade back. Produced by Amma Creations, the film is released by Raj Network. Meera Jasmine, Meena and Ambika have paired up with Vijayakanth who performs dual role of a father-son.

The other film is a small budget one titled 'Kunguma Poovum Konjum Puravum' produced by SPB Charan. This is the first time, a small budget film has been sold out across all areas prior to film's release. Indeed, the distributors have bought the film's rights without even watching the first copy…

Padmapriya doesn’t want to become like Trisha or Nayanthara

Posted: 23 Apr 2009 04:14 AM PDT

Padmapriya was introduced by Director Cheran in the film Thavamai Thavamirundhu. She paired with Cheran in this film. The same pair is once again acting in Pokkesham.

This film is an Hindu- Muslim love story. Cheran is donning the role of a Hindu youth while Padmapriya is donning the role of a Muslim girl in this film. While speaking to the media recently she said," I have already done the role of a Muslim girl in a Malayalam film.

This is the second film in which I am donning the role of a Muslim girl once again. My character name is Nadira who is studying B A Tamil literature. I did not take this film so seriously when I was offered the role.

But after listening to the story I could feel the depth and the intensity of my role. This film doesn't have the slightest shade of the earlier film. Cheran has a different vision in every scene. As a director he has developed himself more in the four years.

I would like to act in films which have a good story line. I don't have the ambition to become like Trisha or Nayanthara. I always want my films to have good story."

Posted: 23 Apr 2009 03:55 AM PDT

Anybody who has seen Asin at a public event is aware of the rapport she shares with her dad, Joseph Thottumkal, or JT, as he is popularly known. The two are found together forever, with her daddy dear guiding her in as many ways as possible. In fact, her dad, a businessman in his own right, was largely responsible for the actress to shape her career properly.
So imagine Asin's chagrin when she is told that her father is suffering from acute appendicitis and needs to undergo surgery soon! The actress cancelled all her film commitments and rushed to a hospital in Andheri to be at her dad's bedside, to make sure he is well. The actress, unable to refute daddy dear's advice, has been dubbing for her films and taking care of her dad, in what has become a very demanding schedule for her.Asin is currently working in London Dreams, pairing with Salman Khan.
