S Janaki, despite the white starched cotton saree that she always sports, is still our most colourful singer, even five decades after she crooned her first song. Her voice is the stuff that legends are made of, with a malleability for moods that many young singers of today can only have envy for.
If she was the voice of adolescent admirations of Sridevi's in Senthoora Poove, she was equally the voice of the rustic tale of gratefulness in Inji Iduppazhaga. Interestingly, both performances were found National Award worthy. If you were to ask music buffs, they would name hundreds of her 30,000 songs as award-worthy, and they wouldn't be wrong in saying so. If she was the voice of Savithri, she was equally the voice of an exuberant Preity Zinta in Nenjiniley, one of her immortal renditions for AR Rahman in Uyire. Forming a formidable duo in the company of SPB, S Janaki has been the reigning queen for music in the years and with time, her voice has only slowly dimmed.
A singer who has sung in as may as 13 languages, it would not be unfair to call her as popular in South India as Lata Mangeshkar is, up north. In fact, comparisons among the duo have been rife form the time they began singing, with Janaki getting her first chance to sing a song, after auditioning with a Lata Mangeshkar number.
With years gone by, S Janaki might have taken the bow from playback singing, but to many singers who are here today, she is a colossus who peak is almost impossible to attain. Here's wishing Janaki-amma, as she is most often called,a happy birthday and lots of happiness!

Lyricists turning actors- Special
Posted: 23 Apr 2009 10:29 AM PDT

Nyabagangal, directed by Jeeva, launched Pa Vijay as a hero, and its audio launch saw many celebrities pondering over his decision to don the greasepaint. But like how lyricist Vaali pointed out, this trend is neither new to lyricists nor the Tamil cinema.
Kambadasan was one of the earliest ports of our times who took to acting on screen as well, and he created a mark for himself by doing it. And then, there was Kannadasan, who did small roles in films, either in songs or in the talky portion of the movies, like he appeared in a song each in Server Sundaram, Rathathilagam and Suriyagandhi.
And then, there was Vaali, who was introduced to acting by Kamal Haasan, and has done memorable roles in films like Sathyaa, Hey Ram and Parthaale Paravasam. In fact, the lyricist also took to the small screen, by being part of one of K Balachandar's serials, Kaiyalavu Manasu.
Kavipperarasu Vairamuthu also donned the greasepaint for a brief time, including acting as himself for a scene in Jodi. Lyricist Kapilan was one of the most recent to act in a film, that too as himself, in Dasavathaaram, along with Kamal Haasan.
And now, Pa Vijay, despite his first project 'Thai Kaaviyam' being junked, has also become an actor, writing, producing and acting in his own movie. Are the other lyricists listening?

As a matter of fact, it's so evident with his options of new technicians in his crew. So far, he had worked with FEFSI Vijayan for stunts and now Kanal Kannan has been replaced.
Of course, the latest sensation of 'Ayan' stunt at Namibia has transfixed every actor. Although Surya's stunt was choreographed by a Hollywood stuntman, it was Kannan who supervised it.
A similar fight would be witnessed with Vijay and Telugu Actor Sri Hari (Husband of Actress Disco Shanthi) at the backdrops of a busy market.

On the same genre arrives the magniloquent team of Vikraman-Vijayakanth who made a blockbuster 'Vaanathai Pola' a decade back. Produced by Amma Creations, the film is released by Raj Network. Meera Jasmine, Meena and Ambika have paired up with Vijayakanth who performs dual role of a father-son.
The other film is a small budget one titled 'Kunguma Poovum Konjum Puravum' produced by SPB Charan. This is the first time, a small budget film has been sold out across all areas prior to film's release. Indeed, the distributors have bought the film's rights without even watching the first copy…

Padmapriya doesn’t want to become like Trisha or Nayanthara
Posted: 23 Apr 2009 04:14 AM PDT

This film is an Hindu- Muslim love story. Cheran is donning the role of a Hindu youth while Padmapriya is donning the role of a Muslim girl in this film. While speaking to the media recently she said," I have already done the role of a Muslim girl in a Malayalam film.
This is the second film in which I am donning the role of a Muslim girl once again. My character name is Nadira who is studying B A Tamil literature. I did not take this film so seriously when I was offered the role.
But after listening to the story I could feel the depth and the intensity of my role. This film doesn't have the slightest shade of the earlier film. Cheran has a different vision in every scene. As a director he has developed himself more in the four years.
I would like to act in films which have a good story line. I don't have the ambition to become like Trisha or Nayanthara. I always want my films to have good story."
