Ace director Mani Rathinam was admitted in the hospital last night after he complained of breathing difficulty and discomfort in the chest. Specialists, including cardiologists, were attending on him. His condition is now stable but he has been advised complete bed rest for few weeks. The 52-year-old director, who introduced Oscar winning musician A R Rahman in "Roja", had survived a heart attack in 2004 when he was filming the multi-starrer, bi-lingual 'Yuva'.
Mr. Rathnam is currently involved in a project starring national award winner Vikram, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, among others, tentatively titled "Raavan."

The tune Yuvan couldn’t compose

Posted: 16 Apr 2009 03:54 AM PDT

We all know Yuvan Shankar Raja as the musician who can do one of the most popular Kuthu song like "Where's the Party Tonight", and one of the most popular melodies like 'Ninaithu Ninaithu'. But can you believe that there has been a tune that Yuvan was found highly incapable of composing!
This was for the film 'Saroja'. The crew did a spoof of the scene in mega serials and the director, Venkat Prabhu wanted Yuvan to compose a tune as the background score for serial scene. However hard he tried, the musician was found quite incapable of creating the routine mega serial music.
Finally, actor Premji Amaran, who played one of the boys in the film, chose to bring a real serial music director to compose the piece and so was brought in music director Prakash.
Prakash was also part of SP Charan's music troupe, besides being Venkat's keyboard player. And that was how the sequence introducing Mirchi Siva in the film was shot, featuring him, Nalini and Shanmuga Sundaram.
With 'Goa' now taking a dig at Panchayats, it remains to be seen if Yuvan will find it in him to compose music for it!

Venkat Prabhu elated over Illayaraja’s praise

Posted: 16 Apr 2009 03:50 AM PDT

Belonging to the family of one of the biggest musical geniuses of the country is not lost on director Venkat Prabhu. Nephew of Illayaraja, Venkat Prabhu cherishes the time he spends with his uncle and was recently overwhelmed by Illayaraja's praise for Venkat's films.
Venkat Prabhu, it seems, was bowled over by Illayaraja's wishes for the director, congratulating him on making the movies he made. In fact, going a step beyond that, Illayaraja even advised Venkat not to make films casting popular heroes. "You are making films that a completely enjoyable. Go ahead and do many more such films," the Isaignani said.
But that's not all. Illayaraja, it seems, was happy about the element of surprise that is found in Venkat's films and asked him to continue it in his forthcoming films. An excited Venkat Prabhu is still basking in the glory of such praise calling it highly unusual and therefore, highly precious.
Venkat Prabhu, director of two hits, 'Chennai 600028' and 'Saroja', is currently working in this third venture, 'Goa'. The movie is being produced by Ocher Studios and features Jai, Vaibhav, Premji, Arvind Aakash and Sneha in the lead.
