From Sivaji to Rajini- the name game

Posted: 15 Apr 2009 09:59 AM PDT

What's in a name? Not much, we might think. But, in tinsel town, a name seems to be everything. Writers like to have pen names and actors like to have screen names. No one knows who started the trend of having screen names, but it sure has caught on like a craze. It would not be wrong to say that it has become a rule rather than an exception to have a screen name. Screen names are no secret, we know the real names of most stars; there will be very few people who do not know that Rajinikanth was born as Sivaji Rao Gaekwad, likewise, most of us know that Tamil cinema's legendary actor was only Ganesan before he brought Sivaji to life on stage. We could go on for ever with such names. But, let's try something different. Why not categorize screen names by their origins, i.e., the reason why they came into being. Some actors are given
screen names by their mentors, some get prefixes or suffixes due to unforgettable performances and others adopt new names because their original ones are not that crisp and easy to recall.
Amongst names given by mentors to their wards the most famous has to be Rajinikanth itself, given by the legendary KB. Then there are a whole lot of heroines introduced by Bharathiraja who have screen names given by him, like Radha and Ranjitha, Bharathiraja itself being the screen name adopted by Chinnasamy. Malayalam director Sathyan Anthikkad felt that Diana Mariam Kurien is too long and anglicized for a desi heroine and changed it to Nayanthara, similarly Lohithadass modified Jasmine Joseph to Meera Jasmine.
The most common type of screen name has to be the ones with suffixes and prefixes that stuck on after a memorable performance. The most famous in this category has to be the legendary Ganesan who got the Sivaji prefix. Then Mohan was labeled Crazy for his antics, Ravi got a permanent Jayam prefix after his debut and many examples like Thalaivasal Vijay, Nizhalgal Ravi, Mahanadi Shankar etc. There is also the type of names that have come into being due to a characteristic trait of an artiste; try this: Gundu Kalyanam, Omakuchi Narasimham etc. Then there are stuntmen in cinema who like to have fiery prefixes like Kanal Kannan, Stunt Siva, Anal Arasu, Super Subbarayan and the likes.
But the most common reason to have screen names seems to be the non-malleable nature of the original ones which might be too big or twisted to easily pronounce or recall. That is how perhaps the rather cumbersome Jamshad Cethiracat became Arya, John Victor Kennedy became Vikram (many say that he adopted the name because of being a huge fan of Kamal's film of the same name). Another huge Kamal fan once saw Kuruthi Punal and changed his name from Prabhu and adopted the codename of the operation in the movie to become Dhanush. Mysskin adopted his fancy name from a Russian book. Joseph Vijay changed to the much crisper Vijay, Vivekananth changed to the short and sweet Vivek, Mohammad Kutty became Mammootty etc.
Then, some actors are forced to change their names for identification purposes. Saravanan had to become Suriya (it has now changed to Suriya) because there was another Saravanan around, Ganesan had to prefix the name of his first employer Gemini because there was another Ganesan with a Sivaji prefix.
Spiritual reason brings about changes like in the case of Dhileep Kumar who became A.R. Rahman or Lawrence who became Raghava Lawrence. There are also many instances where we have no clue of the reason behind the changed name, like in the case of Moorthi who became Parthiban or C. Krishna Rao Gundu Rao who was known to us as Nagesh.
It is indeed fascinating to note that screen names seem more prevalent than real names in cinema. In tinsel town, a name seems to be more than just a name.

Sandhya and her comforts

Posted: 15 Apr 2009 09:49 AM PDT

It is a challenging job to act with two heroes says Sandhya. Manjal Veil has Prasanna, Bala and Sandhya in the cast.
Vaseegaran has directed this film. This film is being released by end of this month. While speaking about this film," I agreed to act in this film when I heard that there were two Heroes in this film because friendship is the basis of this film. Because of this there is no problem with these two heroes.

But still acting with two heroes is challenging. Since Prasanna and Bala were close friends even outside I was able to act very coolly with jolliness. I am donning the role of a modern Chennai girl with a slight homely touch."

Mugamudi dropped by UTV Productions

Posted: 15 Apr 2009 09:30 AM PDT

The most expected project of Surya – Mysskin's Mugamudi will not take off because of the financial turbulence. Surya who immediately agreed to act in this film after listening to the story said, "The most anticipated film for me was Mugamudi.

I was so happy to act in this film. But it now seems that there are some financial problems due to the recent economic recess. This is a high budgeted film and now a question has risen whether we should do this film at this juncture.

UTV who are producing Hindi film has planned to establish their office here by producing this film Mugamudi. But now they are not in a position to produce a Tamil film." What will be Mysskin's next attempt? Let's wait until the release of Nandhalala.

VAAMANAN - MUSIC REVIEW

Posted: 15 Apr 2009 04:57 AM PDT

Review by : Malathy Sundaram
Music Director : Yuvan Shankar RajaVocals: Javed Ali, Sowmya Rao, BlaaZe , Suvi , Mohd Aslam, Preethi, D.J. Earl, Roop Kumar Rathod, Vijay YesudasLyrics: Na. Muthukumar
Produced by R. Ravendran of Dream Valley Corporation, directed by I. Ahmed (who was an assistant to Kadhir) and starring Jai, newcomer Priya Ananth, Rahman, Laxmi Rai, Urvasi and 'Thalaivasal' Vijay, this movie tells the story of a young lad from Salem who comes to Chennai and enjoys some colorful experiences. Music has been scored by Yuvan Shankar Raja, who has been consistently hitting high points these days. He has put together five songs for the film. Let us set off on another musical trip.

Yaedho Seygiraai---Vocals: Javed Ali, Sowmya Rao
An interestingly put-together song that hovers between Pop and R&B, this number is pleasant to listen. It is composed on the Kiravani scale. Notice how subtly the guitar accompaniment varies for both the charanams. The keyboards interludes are cool too. A pleasure to hear the sparkling sangatis of Javed in 'Adadaa' and 'Unnaal'!

Lucky Star---Vocals: BlaaZe, Suvi, Mohd Aslam
This song varies between slower and faster tempos in a peppy manner and again, pleasingly conceived. Gives a kind of 'build-up' to the hero perhaps! Is likely to be relished by the youth for its racy appeal

Money Money---Vocals: Preethi & D.J. Earl
Plainly a 'party' number with a hip-hop touch to it, this song still appeals because of its carefully paced-out rhythm that does'nt hurt the ears. Well sung by Preethi and decent lyrics from Muthukumar. You take some time to warm up to this number.

Oru Devathai---Vocals: Roop Kumar Rathod
The plaintive Sarangi and the deep tabla notes bring a lot of 'special effects' to this song, which is paced languorously. One hears a bit of Hamsadwani and Sankarabaranam in the song. Roop Kumar Rathod, his voice now dipping, now soaring, is able to bring tiny nuances into the song because of the slower pace. Like the other hit of Yuvan 'Engaeyo Partha', this song could also make a slow climb onto the charts and stay there.

Engey Povadhu---Vocals: Vijay Yesudas
Vijay, with his restrained singing, adds a nice and sober effect to this soft number which philosophizes about life. The guitars go' pa ni ga ri ga' and 'ni sa ri sa ri' adding pleasing Natabairavi touches to the song. The violin and flute are just functional here.

Verdict:
Yuvan has once again racked up his grey cells to bring out some funky stuff here. Pleasant use of strings, sarangi and tabla deserve mention. One may take some time to warm up to this album this time around.

Sridevika gets a makeover

Posted: 15 Apr 2009 04:48 AM PDT

If leading actresses like Nayantara and Anushka lead the way, can the others be far behind? It looks like the glamour bug has spared none as all actresses, including those with a conventional image, are trying hard to become glam girls.
And the next in the list is actress Sridevika. For the uninitiated, she was the actress with the demure image opposite Jai Akash in the washout film, 'Ramakrishna'. She today has had a makeover beyond recognition, and has reentered Kollywood with the hope of a successful second run now. After a forgettable debut in Kollywood, she moved to Kerala, where had played important roles with leading heroes like Jayaram.
Having teamed with top stylists in the city, the actress has signed two films, 'Gnabagangal' with Pa Vijay and 'Sarithiram' with 'Mirugam' Samy. The music of 'Gnabagangal' is being launched today.
Ask her if she consciously tried an image makeover and she asks, "Is this what is called a makeover? I don't know." She adds that her roles in both films required her to be modern and she just agreed to it. "In 'Sarithiram', my character actually spans from the 1960s to the 1980s." Here's hoping Sridevika really has a successful glamourous year ahead.

Aishwarya is the woman on top!

There have never been any doubts about Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's star power, and proving it is a survey conducted by a research agency called Hansa Research. In an extensive study conducted by the company to measure celebrity power in India, it was found that Ash is one of the most persuasive and liked celebs in the country.
She even garnered a 98.8% recognition rating, which puts her on par with legends like father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan and cricket sensation Sachin Tendulkar.
According to the list, the beauty queen is placed well above newcomers like Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor, and even veteran actress Madhuri Dixit.
The study made an effort to measure the power of star qualities like popularity, media presence, power of persuasion and image aspects. And in an interesting twist, Ash is the only woman on the top ten list of recognized celebs from different walks of life. Posted: 15 Apr 2009 04:09 AM PDT

He has all set to hop-skip across different genres completely from his previous film now. Vikram K Kumar made his debut in Tamil Cinema with 'ALAI' a film that swept him terribly downside.
Perhaps, after 6 years of struggle he geared up with a tremendous blockbuster 'Yaavarum Nalam'. With the film still running successfully across the centres, he has made official statements about his next film. Says Vikram "The untitled project would be a bilingual film made in Telugu and Tamil simultaneously… It's a pure poignant romantic story that has no backdrops of Thriller or Action. I have learnt many unknown aspects of filmmaking from cinematographer P.C. Sriram as he worked with me in 'Yaavarum Nalam'.
As a matter of fact, he's one of the best reasons for turning the film to be more successful. I have requested for his call sheet for my next film too".

'Prem Kahani' – Although it sounds like a Hindi title, it's not as you think. Yeah! The film's title has been marked with a Hindi one, but the film is actually made in Kannada, Tamil and Telugu simultaneously. Director Chandru was more successful with his previous Kannada Film 'Taj Mahal' that won him laurels. Now, he's making this film multi-lingual with Actress Sheela and Ajay in lead roles.
However, with the film soon to get completed and hit the screens, the producers Council Members have objected the film carrying Hindi Title. Nevertheless, Chandru has expressed his point of view's statements and is waiting for their conclusion…
