No fights in 'Sa-Boo-Three'

Posted: 25 Mar 2009 11:33 AM PDT

The title would remind one of the games played as a child. So is the film about games?
We asked the director Arshad Khan.

"It's a romantic comedy. It describes the romance of 18, 25 and 30 year old men. The film has romance and comedy narration without fights," he answered.
Of the 3 heroes, one is played by Arshad Khan himself. The other 2 heroes are Prajun of Sun Music fame and newcomer Akshay. The 5 heroines are Mithuna, Sara, Aksha, Ujjaini and Pinky. Except Mithuna, the other 4 are newcomers. Sara has appeared in ad films. Aksha is from Srilanka. Ujjaini is a playback singer.

Arshad has worked as assistant in films 'Mandhodu Mazhaikaalam' and 'Yaavarum Nalam.' He makes his directorial debut with 'Sa-Boo-Three.' Rajesh Khanna produces the film for R Studios. Abbas Rabi, disciple of AR Rehman, is the music composer. The 5 songs are supposed to have come out great.
Let's listen to the songs after the audio release and give our verdict!

The comedian who made Vadivelu cry

Posted: 25 Mar 2009 11:31 AM PDT

There is this actor called Singamuthu. Read on to figure out who that is.
He's the one who spouts this dialogue "Paasakkaara payalunga. Nammalavittu saapidamaattaingannu…" and makes Vadivelu mad in 'Bhagavathy.' He appears in many films beside Vaidevleu but the Puyal seems to be grumbling not even to set eyes on his face.

There is reason for this. Singamuthu's acting profession is only a side business for him. His main career is as real estate agent. He uses his cinema connections and has made several crores in real estate business. He has made his son a hero and is even producing the debut film 'Maamadurai.'
With his faith in Singamuthu, Vadivelu bought up a few properties in the city. The problem lies there. The properties Vadivelu has bought has been sold to 2 or 3 other parties. Coming to know of it, the Vaigai Puyal is lamenting about goodies gone….

Vignesh's antics: Villain rescues heroine

Posted: 25 Mar 2009 11:30 AM PDT

"Not even one film of his has run well but Vignesh's antics are intolerable," grumble many on the sets of 'Eesa.'
However well oiled you are, only that much mud will stick to you, is a saying well suited to Vignesh. He is trying hard to become a successful hero but things have just not worked out for him. His latest effort is 'Eesa' in which he is paired with Lakshana.

From the day of the film's pooja, Vignesh has had an eye on Lakshana and tries to flirt with her at any given opportunity. But Lakshana has taken no notice of him. When the shooting shifted to an outdoor stint in Tuticorin, the hero thought the setting would be ideal for his antics.
One of the shots shows the hero biting the heroine's cheek and it seems Vignesh actually bit her on her cheek! This upset Lakshana and she refused to shoot any more with the hero and walked out. It took a great deal of cajoling to pacify her and resume shooting for the film.

Not content with this, the enamored Vignesh tried to burst into Lakshana's room at night and force himself on her. The frightened Lakshana screamed for help and Rajender who does the villain role, rushed to her rescue and saved her from Vignesh's clutches.
The next day, Lakahana checked out. Vignesh refused to pay his room rent. (He also did some production work on behalf of the producer). The hotel staff demanded the money that the room had been booked on behalf of the company.

Since Vignesh refused, the staff forced him into a room, kept him captive and called for the police. He was later freed after recommendations.

Prithviraj arrives to compete with Anushka

Posted: 25 Mar 2009 11:11 AM PDT

Following the success of horror and supernatural flicks Yaavarum Nalam and Arundhathee released on Fridays, a film based on black magic releases this weekend to complete the horror hat trick for Kollywood. Titled Sivapuram, the film is the dubbed version of the 2005 Malayalam hit Ananthabhadram starring Prithviraj, directed and cinematographed by Santhosh Sivan.
The film is set in the mysterious village of Sivapuram
where superstitions and black magic make the air heavy. People fear to venture out after dark lest they run into the restless spirits and the vicious magician who carries out his dark rituals at night. A youngster returns from USA to his native village to fulfill the last wish of his mother, to light a lamp at the ancient temple in the village. But, it is not as easy as it looks. The magician has been watching over the temple for years, awaiting the return of the heir. He has deep and deadly motives and he covets the mythical gemstone guarded by a serpent deep in the caves of the village, which can be unearthed only by the heiress of the guardian family.
The highlights of the film include a stupendous performance by Manoj K Jayan appearing as the black magician, he got a few awards for the role, director Santhosh Sivan's wizardry with the camera and Prithviraj's presence. The cast is full of other actors who are very familiar to Tamil audiences like Kavya Madhavan, Cochin Haneefa, Kalabhavan Mani, Riya Sen and Revathi. This should be able to negate the dubbed film feel to a large extent. Let's wait and watch if the hat trick horror release can translate into hat trick box office successes.
Besides Sivapuram, another film based again on black magic has been dubbed to Tamil from Malayalam. Titled Tanthiran, it was released originally in 2007 and the dubbed version will be out soon. Looks like this summer will be a horror fest for Kollywood.

Kamal’s advice to the industry

Posted: 25 Mar 2009 06:41 AM PDT

Summer in Chennai has arrived and vacation for children is round the corner. Hence it is no surprise that Kollywood is planning a children's film this season which is aptly titled Pasanga. This film directed by Pandiraj and produced by Sasi of Subramaniapuram fame had its audio launch this morning at Sathyam cinemas which was attended by Dr M Balamuralikrishna and Kamal Haasan among other dignitaries of Kollywood. Dr Balamuralikrishna has sung a song in the film and on this occasion he
recalled how happy he was to work with a young team. Kamal in his speech said that it is time that the industry clearly categorizes their films into family based or children oriented or sex films. This makes it a lot easier for the audience to choose their films and does not give an opportunity to cringe in the seats in a wrong film.
Director Pandiraj said that he had nurtured the idea of making a good children's film ever since he saw Anjali and his dreams came true after Sasi agreed to produce his film. While talking about Pasanga he says that it would not only appeal to children but also to elders. Pasanga has music scored by James Vasanthan and Vega of Saroja fame and Vimal play the lead roles along with 10 kids.

Recession: Kutti and VTV stay in India

Posted: 25 Mar 2009 05:12 AM PDT

Looks like recession has made the producers think twice about investing in foreign locales for a few songs. Two upcoming movies, Dhanush's Kutti and Silambarasan's Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya, are being shot in different parts of South India.
Dhanush's next flick Kutti, directed by Jawahar and also starring Shriya is being filmed in the Orissa - Andhra border. This off the beaten track location was discovered by director Jawahar where shoots are
being carried out after obtaining special permission from the Railways. On the other hand, Gautam Menon is stationed at his favorite hangout Alleppey with his VTV crew. While Gautam is exploring Alleppey for the right locations to shoot, Trisha and Silambarasan are awaiting the director's call from the backwaters.

Pattalam Movie Preview

Starring: Nadiya, Arun, Kiruba, Sathya, Balaji, Vikas, Suresh, Hari, Vignesh, Guru, IrfanDirection: Rohan Krishna Music: Jassie Gift Production: Tirupathi Brothers
An army of young exuberant school kids are going to invade theaters this Friday through Pattalam. This is the second production of Lingusaamy's banner Tirupathi Brothers. A theme woven around school kids and their carefree world full of mischief and fun is seldom explored in mainstream Tamil cinema. The last movie one can recollect on these lines was Kasthuriraja's Thulluvadho Ilamai, but even that was more grown up than what was expected from a movie featuring school children. However,
Pattalam, from its trailer, promises to be a more genuine look into the world of those who have just about stepped into their teens.
Featuring a host of newcomers along with the experienced Nadiya, the movie revolves around how the correspondent of a school (Nadiya), who also happens to be a psychiatrist, manages to influence a bunch of young school kids and turn the school into a model institution. The newcomers Arun, Kiruba, Sathya, Balaji, Vikas, Suresh, Hari, Vignesh, Guru and Irfan were chosen by debutante director Rohan Krishna after an extensive screening process during which as many as 500 aspirants were scrutinized.
The movie claims to be a very genuine representation of the lives of children in schools and the methods used to harness their potential. Any common man will be able to relate to what happens in the movie.
Rohan Krishan has been an associate of Priyadarshan and Santhosh Sivan. The story of Pattalam has been written by Sheeba Rohan, music has been scored by Jassie Gift ('Four Students' fame). Close to the vacation season, let's see whether Pattalam can re-awaken the school adventure genre.
