Producer Gopal Reddy passes away Posted: 13 Sep 2008 11:24 AM CDT Gopal Reddy, eminent producer in both Kollywood and Tollywood passed away on Friday in Chennai after prolonged illness. He had been undergoing treatment for kidney disorders at Apollo Hospital for the past two weeks. He was 64. He was the producer of many popular movies during his time. Prominent personalities from the film field and other walks of life expressed their grief. Among those who visited his residence to pay their final respects were actor Vishal, producer G.K. Reddy, Vikram Krishna and his family. Behindwoods condoles the demise of producer Gopal Reddy.

Madhavan files complaint against his own film Posted: 13 Sep 2008 11:23 AM CDT The already delayed Naan Aval Adhu has run into further trouble. Madhavan has filed a complaint against the producer Gaurav Sharma in the Nadigar Sangam and the Producer's Council. The producer, allegedly, is yet to pay Madhavan's compensation of Rs. 75 lakhs. Naan Aval Adhu also has Sada and Shamita Shetty and is directed by Kona Venkat. But, the problems with Naan Aval Adhu are much more serious than just Madhavan's fee issues. The producer, Kona Venkat reportedly ran into financial troubles during the final phase of the movie's shooting. He left Chennai without informing anybody and the shooting of the movie was stalled. After many days the producer returned to Chennai and went ahead with the post production works without informing the crew about it. He is reported to have edited the movie and dubbed it into Telugu with the intention of releasing it, even with a portion of the script still remaining to be shot. He is also said to have tried to organize an audio release function in Hyderabad which was stopped after director Kona Venkat filed a complaint in the Andhra Pradesh council. Gourav Sharma is also believed to have tried to arrange for an audio release in Tamil. But even this seems to be in trouble as Madhavan who is currently in Mumbai shooting for a Hindi film has already spoken to Nadigar Sangam chief Sarathkumar regarding this and will meet other office bearers immediately upon his return from Mumbai. With troubles of such serious nature's brewing, one can only hope that Naan Aval Adhu does not get inordinately delayed.

With shooting for the film completed and ready for release, audio was launched yesterday in Chennai with versatile personalities taking part in it. Producer Kalaipuli G Sekaran while speaking during the occasion said that as the title goes the film too will really be successful in box office. Also added those now days, it's off a great difficulty in releasing the small budget films during the occasion of biggies hitting screens. But, small budget films made with good themes will be a sure hit amongst the masses. Actor Sathyaraj on his turn said that G. Ramachandiran, producer of this film is a good actor too. Continued adding that he is such a good person that everyone working with him is elated. How come Sathyaraj can move of the stage without making fun of everyone? Yes, he started taking it on Murali who was not present there for the occasion. "This is the reason one shouldn't make films with school boy like Murali and producer should have opted me to play the lead role" said Sathyaraj. Immediately turning his attention towards Kasthooriraja, he addressed the gathering stating the reason behind Kasthooriraja sitting beside Kushboo was because of the fact that he would be included in the photo clicked by photographers. Earlier, Sathyaraj used to worry why there isn't any signature song for him and now music director Deva has full filled his desire. Now, you know the song Sathyaraj's friends sing on him. 'Saroja' on top Posted: 13 Sep 2008 05:48 AM CDT Venkat Prabhu has proved that he is not a one-film-wonder as director. After the stupendous success of 'Chennai 28', Venkat Prabhu has recreated the same magic with his latest film 'Saroja'. Produced by T Siva's Amma Creations, the movie features the likes of S P B Charan, Premji Amaran, Siva, Nikitha, Jayaram. Prakash Raj among others. Music is by Yuvan Shankar Raja. The highlight of the movie has been the racy sequences with sudden twists and turns. Saroja has now toppled the likes of 'Kuselan' and 'Satyam' to emerge at the top at the box office. 'Dhaam Dhoom' which featured Jayam Ravi and Kangana Ranawat, had a terrific opening only to settle down playing second fiddle to 'Saroja'. This racy entertainer which is the last film of cinematographer - director Jeeva, was shot extensively in Russia. The brisk music of Harris Jayaraj adds to the momentum. Sathyajothy Thyagarajan's 'Jeyam Kondaan' which features Vinay, Lekha Washington and Bhavana, is a family entertainer. The movie directed by debutant Kannan, a onetime associate of Manirathinam, was more of a war between a brother and his step-sister. A sense of deja vu prevailed in the movie. The movie which managed a good word-of-mouth publicity has managed to draw good audiences in urban centers. Ritheesh's 'Nayakan' and the Vishal starrer 'Satyam' are reportedly drawing decent crowds. The former a remake of Hollywood biggie 'Cellular' won good reviews and had no big expectations riding on it. The film has gone on to collect good revenue. Rajnikanth's 'Kuselan' and Kamal Haasan's 'Dasavatharam' are still playing in a few theatres. However with 'Poi Solla Porom', a comedy caper, making its entry, one may expect the movie to garner attention. In the coming weeks, movies including 'Raman Thediya Seethai' featuring Cheran and 'Pandhayam', directed by S A Chandrasekhar will grace theaters.

'Gone are the days filmmakers read books' - Balumahendra Posted: 13 Sep 2008 05:47 AM CDT Speaking at the music album launch for the film 'Poo', veteran director Balumahendra stressed on the point that young directors are not in the habit of reading books. 'Gone are the days when filmmakers were in the habit of reading good books. These days they just watch DVDs of films', said the eminent filmmaker. 'All my stories have the essence of literature in them which brings about the much needed authenticity. Reading habit inculcates these elements that are precious. Whenever someone joins me as an assistant, I make it a point to make then read a short story a day and submit to me the synopsis. Points that seriously needs to be pondered on. Balumahendra also said that when he was making the serial 'Kathai Neram' for a private satellite channel, he wanted to visually adapt a short story named 'Veyyilodu Poi' written by Tamilchelvan. When he took steps to acquire the necessary permission, he was informed that directed Sasi had taken the initiative. 'Poo' starring Srikanth and Parvathy is based on this story. The audio launch function also had dignitaries such as Thilagavathy I.P.S, Writer Tamilchelvan, Kalaipuli S.Thanu, Vasanth, Ameer, and actors Srikanth and Jeeva, Music director Vijay Antony and others. 'Poo' is directed by Sasi and produced by Moser Baer in association with Nesaki film Productions. Music has been composed by S. S. Kumaran.

'Naan Aval Adhu' music album from Sept 16 Posted: 13 Sep 2008 05:33 AM CDT The Madhavan – Sada – Shamita Shetty starrer 'Naan Aval Adhu' is slated to have it's music album launch on the 16th of September. A major highlight of the album is that it has four music directors in the form of G. V. Prakash, R. P. Patnaik, Dharan and Prasanna Sekhar. The film is directed by Kona Venkat and is the first production venture of Storm Pictures. The film is being made simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu and is slated for a bilingual release. This is the third film that Madhavan and Sada are teaming up for. The other two films are 'Ethiri' and 'Priyasakhi'. Madhavan who has 'Guru En Aalu' gearing up for release would ideally like to back it up with 'Naan Aval Adhu' in order to gain firm footing in the Tamil film industry.

The latest to join this bandwagon will be Mambattiyan, a remake of Thyagarajan Saritha starrer Malaiyur Mambattiyan which hit the screens in the eighties. This film had lilting melodies by Isaignani Ilayaraja. Thyagarajan will be directing this film with his son Prashanth doing his dad's role in the current version and Meera Jasmine has been approached to do Saritha's role. Prakashraj and Vadivelu form part of the supporting cast. Goundamani's character in the older version would be taken over by Vadivelu. As Jayamalini had expressed her desire not to make a re-entry into films, the crew is looking for an actress to do her role.

Jai ready for the challenge Posted: 13 Sep 2008 05:27 AM CDT A complaint has been lodged against actor Jai by a debutant director Prabhu with the Tamil Film Producers' Council that he was not cooperating to complete the film 'Adhey Neram Adhey Idam'. Jai, who made his debut with 'Bhagavathy' emerged a popular hero after the success of 'Chennai 600028' and 'Subramaniapuram'. Jai said, 'I agreed to do a film for Prabhu and accommodated 30 days for shooting. Unfortunately, he could not complete the movie and wanted more dates from me. But then I am busy with other commitments.' He also alleged that the director had narrated a story but then seems to have shot something else. This according to Jai was not appreciated by him and his co-stars. 'I wonder why a complaint was lodged against me. Anyway I am ready to face it,' he said.

The actor-turned politician had acted in over 150 films so far and his 151st film 'Engal Aasaan' is nearing completion. The actor has also given to nod to be part of a film titled 'Mariyadhai', which is to be directed by Vikraman. Vijayakanth made his debut with 'Thoorathu Idi Muzhakkam' and his 100th film 'Captain Prabhakaran' went on to become a huge blockbuster. Speaking at a public meeting in Erode, Vijayakanth said his maiden directorial venture will be titled 'Vridhagiri'. He would play an honest cop in the movie who fights for the cause of the common man. Sources close to Vijayakanth say, 'Vijayakanth started his political campaign in the last Assembly elections from Vridhagireeswarar temple at Vriddachalam. He went on to win the Assembly election from Vriddachalam. Therefore, he has named the film 'Vridhagiri.'

If that is true, this makes her India's highest paid actress! But it is to be noted that Aishwarya agreed to work in Enthiram out of the respect she has for Rajinikanth. Forced by busy schedules to turn down a role opposite Rajini thrice before, Aishwarya deemed it would be inappropriate to deny the stalwart's offer anymore. That is the main reason she signed Enthiram even after her call sheet overflowed with dates allocated to Mani Ratnam's bilingual. Thus it is of little surprise that the producers of Enthiram, Ayngaran International and Eros International, are willing to pay the actress such a hefty price. Happy with Aishwarya's commitment, director Shankar has even decided to give her a break when Mani Ratnam's film shoot starts. At present, a song is being filmed on Aishwarya and Rajinikanth for Enthiram in Machu Picchu, an ancient temple site erected by Inca Indians in Peru. Latest fashion in Kollywood – Remaking Hindi films Posted: 13 Sep 2008 05:03 AM CDT Move over Malayalam remakes. It's now time for Tamil movies to be made inspired by numerous Hindi films. 'Guru En Aalu' starring Madhavan is the remake of Shahrukh Khan's 'Yes Boss', while Ajith's under-production venture 'Aegan' is an adaptation of the Hindi hit 'Main Hoon Na'. Efforts are now on to do the Tamil remake of the Hindi blockbuster 'Jab We Met' which featured Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor in lead roles. The recently released 'Poi Solla Porom', directed by Vijay and produced by UTV and Four Frames, is a xerox copy of the Bollywood comedy caper 'Khosla Ka Ghosla'. Fresh reports indicate that P Vasu is planning to do the Tamil version of 'Baazigar'. Say industry men, 'with corporates from Mumbai stepping in to do Tamil movies, it is obvious that several Hindi films are being remade in Tamil. Moreover, after Bollywood, Tamil Cinema has huge global audiences. Therefore it is obvious that we are opting for the remake of Hindi hits'.
