Aftermath of the Oscars

Posted: 27 Feb 2009 04:52 AM CST

'Slumdog Millionaire' won eight Oscars out of the ten nominations at the Academy awards presented on 22nd February. But seldom, the ceremony had an aftermath effect which is now prevalent all over India. Things kicked off when Fox Pictures volunteered to sponsor the kids who were part of the cast, for their trip to Los Angeles to grace the Academy award function. The elated children's joy knew no bounds as they flew from Mumbai straight to Hollywood. A special treat awaited them on the other side when they were also escorted to the Disney land for a pleasure trip followed by their elegant attendance during the Oscars. Child actors Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, 10, and Rubina Ali, 9, who are slum dwellers will be sponsored for their education till they turn 18 by the production house. Similar to the rags-to-riches story, these kids are now going to live on the brighter side of life with proper education and maybe in a posh apartment as the government of Maharashtra has announced two flat allotments for their family. A tax exemption has also been proclaimed for the Oscar winners for the cash awards received. 'Slumdog Millionaire' has revoked the life of slums in Mumbai as foreign tourists are keen to take a tour into the locales, especially Asia's largest slum, Dharavi. Tour operators worked round-the-clock and designed special packages to guide tourists around the area. News reports says that even Mumbai residents are showing interest to walk through the slums which they used to pass through without a second glance in the past. Latest updates reveal that Fox Pictures are raising funds to facilitate Dharavi and develop it into a residential area for the people to live in a healthy atmosphere. Till now, it is being said about 6 crores have been collected and it is expected to increase with the time to come. 'Slumdog Millionaire' is not just the story of an ordinary guy who becomes a millionaire but also the messiah for the slums and its residents in Mumbai who are looking forward for a change in future. All said done, now will our production companies volunteer to undertake such efforts for people's well being? Or at least a step forward to help the cast for a better living? When they are all busy thriving to rake in moolah with the star value, we really wonder if this is possible for reality.

I voted for the young lad - Director Balu Mahendra

Posted: 27 Feb 2009 04:49 AM CST

A versatile filmmaker – A vivid inspirer – fantastic cinematographer and what else? It's been a great honor for all in putting best words of appreciation for Filmmaker Balu Mahendra. Tamil Film Industry calls him – 'Father of Golden Era' for he had introduced exceptionally innovative traits in filmmaking.
Here goes the exclusive statement made by Balu Mahendra on A.R. Rahman while launching the audio of 'Indira Vizha'.
"I was channelizing the association that finalizes winners of National Awards. It was during that time when Illayaraja's 'Devar Maghan' and A.R. Rahman's 'Roja' was in hand-to-hand combat. I was fascinated watching both the films. For a greater surprise, both the nominees won 7 votes each. And the task of deciding the winner indeed was directed to me. That was a moment when I thought none can produce such a fantastic music for the first film itself. With no options left I voted for A.R. Rahman'.
Also added, 'Still I remember, Mani Ratnam calling him 'Kutti Payya' (Small Kid) while receiving the award'.

To be titled as Dr. A.R. Rahman

Yup! We're gleefully excited to hear that Aligarh Muslim University of Uttar Pradesh would confer the title of 'Doctrine' for A.R. Rahman for his stupendous achievement in Indian Cinema. On April 25, A.R. Rahman would be felicitated along with Rathan Tata for his 'NANO' Car-project and 'Father of Green Revolution' M.S. Swaminathan.

Asin’s constant escort

Posted: 27 Feb 2009 04:47 AM CST

It is quite common in the film circuit for mothers of actresses to accompany them where they go. However, in Asin's case it is her father who has taken up the role. Joseph Thottumkal is accompanying her wherever she goes. Recently, the star's dad was spotted by her side when she attended the Women Achievers' Awards function.
Sources have it that Joseph Thottumkal is now spending so much time with his daughter that he
could end up winding his business. Mr. Thottumkal is currently in Mumbai scouting for a home for Asin, raising the speculations that the actress could shift her base to Bollywood permanently.

Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) is a street kid (or "slumdog") who has landed an appearance on India's version of the hit TV game show WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE? Jamal exceeds expectations on the show, and the producers alert the police after they become suspicious of his methods. The young contestant is subsequently arrested and is interrogated at the hands of a nameless police inspector (played by Bollywood star Irfan Khan). As the interrogation proceeds, Boyle tells Jamal's story through harrowing flashbacks that both show the terrible poverty of Mumbai and help explain how he knew the answers to the MILLIONAIRE questions. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE is a tightly woven story that has been expertly edited into shape. The contrast between Jamal's upbringing and his chance of escaping it on the show are adeptly juxtaposed. Mumbai is portrayed as a place of terrifying poverty and unforgettable brutality, and Jamal and his brother get into a never-ending succession of challenging situations. But the way Boyle ties together Jamal's life experiences with his answers on the show is quite brilliant, and the film really does run the full gamut of emotions as we see him growing up, falling in love, coming close to death, and teetering on the brink of escaping from his terrible predicament. The film belongs to Boyle's cast, who are mostly unknown outside of India. Patel, in particular, gives a startlingly mature performance that audiences are likely to remember long after the credits role on this affecting feature.

So, what has Superstar Rajnikanth got to do with this film? Is he there on the title cards? Is he there playing lead role. Somewhat yes, Rajnikanth would be appearing in guest appearance in few scenes. But, with this minimal role, he has lots and lots to showcase. Definitely those who hadn't watched the film would have a thundering effect.
